My old "dumb" phone allowed me to assign ringtones for individual contacts (as does WM), it also allowed me to assign a generic ringtone for all contacts in my address book (that don't have a specific ringtone assigned) versus a different ringtone for all callers not in my address book.

Can you do this in WM 6.1 or WM in general?

yes, you can do this on WM6.1. It lets you assign a general ringtone of your choice in Sounds & Notifications and then also individual ringtones as you edit your contact details.

It lets you also create your own ringtones with an MP3 trimmer and recognizes a variety of formats.

Calm down there bud.

You can't set a specific ringer for unknown numbers different from the default ringtone that is set.

I read the question again (3 times) - I didn't even get it with the difference from address book to non-address book, LOL!

Thanks dfootball!

I am pretty sure there are third-party apps that will let you profile your address book with ring tones. I see them every once in while.

If you have a small list of contacts; Smiley
"ok, I'm failing to see why go through that process of registry edits when there's no need. Just goto settings tab, select sound and scroll to ringtone and set a ringer. That will be your ringer for unknown callers. For contact ringers, goto people tab, bottom left select (all people). Find a contact and select. Bottom right select menu then edit. Scroll down to ring and select a ringer. Do that for all contacts."

You can also go into Registry Editor;
"Ok, found it (again) over at xda developers:

At the w06 registry, at HKCU/ControlPanel/Sounds/RingTone0/ you can
set the default phone ringtone.
At the HKCU/ControlPanel/Sounds/KnownCallerRing0/ you can set the
ringtone for your contacts.

So, by default, the "sounds and notifications" control panel is just setting up "RingTone0"
Go there, set the ringer up the way you want it for Known callers (callers in your contacts list without caller-specific ringtones) and then, in a registry editor, copy all the stuff in RingTone0 into KnownCallerRing0. Now go back into the sounds and notifications CP, and change the ringer to something else. That will be used for *unknown* calls, while the other ringer (the one you set first) will be used for known calls, unless the contact has a ringer, in which case *that* ringer will be used.

Make sense? It has to, it's from Microsoft;)
