mine defaults to last name, first name.... however... when all my contacts were imported from the SIM they came in with full name in the first name field, so I have to manually add a last name and delete the last name from the first name field one at a time anyway, or leave them all as full name in the first name field.

possible this would be easier if I sync'd to outlook and did there... pity I use thunderbird..

Is there a way to sync with thunderbird ?

TRY THIS

PEOPLE TAB --> ALL PEOPLE(BOTTOM LEFT)-->MENU(BOTTOM RIGHT)-->OPTIONS (FROM POPUP MENU)--> CHECK MARK (SHOW ALPHABETICAL INDEX AND SHOW CONTACTNAMES ONLY)

show contact names just removes the phone number from the list view so more names fit on the screen.
still shows all contacts regardless of on sim or in phone.

alphabetical index puts an extra set of buttons across the top of the list for jumping to alpha points in the list. very handy but not the issue at hand.

It depends on how your contact are in outlook.  Did you save your contacts in outlook as last first?  I had that for a while and noticed all my contacts on my phone showed up last name first (which drives me crazy).  You can do a select all in your outlook contact, change the file as to first name first.  Re-sync your phone and new changes should take effect (depending on the company your phone is connected with).  If that doesn;t work, you would have to disgard all your contact on your phone, the re-sync.

If yo udon't want to discard all your contacts for this fix I understand.  At least with these style of phones, when you start to enter the name, it shows all matching options, making it easier to find a match.

You still have to do them one by one right? or is there an other way? I certainly hope so!!
