I have noticed from all the posts in the forum that there are lots of first time WinMo device users.  First off, welcome and I hope that you get as much function, fun, convenience and enjoyment out of your device as I have.  I would like to address a couple of misconceptions, for those of you that know about WinMo...please bear with me...

1)  The Touch Pro is classified as a smartphone, but the cell phone feature of the phone is just one small little function.  These devices used to be called Pocket PCs.  Microsoft decided, not too long ago, to start calling them Windows Mobile Devices.  Only a small portion of what you learned about cell phones truly apply here.

2)  The Instinct is NOT to be compared to the Touch Pro, apples and oranges.  The Instinct is a not so successful attempt at a "semi" smartphone.  If you take what you learned from the Instinct and try to apply it to your TP, you'll be scratching your head.  I did!!

3)  There is a HUGE base of knowledge out there on the Internet, since Windows Mobile (as a mobile platform) has been around for quite some time.  If you happen to learn somethings from other forums...it would be decent of you to bring it here and share.

4)  Applications, programs whatever you want to call them...are out there.  There is no ONE source for WinMo apps, and prices can run from over $100 to free.  BECAREFUL WHERE YOU GET YOUR APPS AND HOW YOU GET THEM, think PC and virus...would you go around the Net and just downloading .exe files on your computer??  Same thing applies here.

5)  If your Touch Pro starts lagging and running slow...make sure you don't have 5 gazillion programs still open.  One drawback of WinMo is that when you hit the x button on the top right...it doesn't always stop the application.  Think minimizing on your home computer.

6)  There are a million and one ways of customizing your phones...I suggest start small, and start slow...don't jump in the deep end without a safety net (backing up your data.)  Or you'll be stuck with a bricked TP and you'll have to hard reset.

7)  I apologize for such a long post, but I wish someone had mentioned all these things to me when I bought my first WinMo device.  Would have saved me lots of time and effort.  Please don't think me condescending, just want to spread a little knowledge.

Mods, edit at your discretion...sticky if you think this is helpful material.

I'd add that the TP shouldn't be compared to cell phones, period, not just the instinct or the iphone. IMO, there's really 3 classes of devices. cell phones, lifestyle / media phones (iphone instinct, etc) and smartphones / pdas. Smartphone/PDA's have the steepest learning curve of all, but offer much, much more potential than the others (and WM devices especially, since they're so hackable)

I say make it a sticky

Yes, there are tons of applications but they're old-style PDA applications designed for devices that did not have graphics acceleration.   They're not flashy or graphical, they tend to be clunky drop-down-box type applications.  Win Mo devices are just now getting graphics accelration hardware so it will be a while before we start seeing lots of highly graphical apps.    By comparison, iPhone has had accelerated graphics since day one.  Mind you the rest of the iPhone is still 2 year-old technology but they've had video cards the whole time.
