I remember seeing a place where it appeared that you can program the functionality of some of the buttons. But....I played with it a bit and couldn't figure out how to change and/or  add button functionality. Any help  is appreciated.

Try Start::Settings::Personal::Buttons::Choose whatever you want/need.

I know this place to set them...but...When i go there, there is one button that can be assigned...this is the "send key"....and then there is a pull down menu allowing me to set it to perform a function. Is this the only key that can be programmed?

There's a program called AEButtons Plus. It lets you remap several hardware keys:

Well, I've got plenty of buttons to assign.
But try Atomics proposal and tell us if it works out for you.
