Speaker volume help?

Idk if its just me or not, but when Im making a call and I use the switch on the outside of the phone to turn up the volume to its highest setting its still very hard for me to hear the other person. Im new to the whole smartphone gig and was wondering if there was another way to turn it up. Thanks in advance.
