I've had my TP for all of 5 days. My biggest issue is trying to install ActiveSync. I am running an XP machine with SP3. It will stop the install at about 51% and all it tells me is that installation can't be completed. I'm wondering if one or both of these ideas might be an issue: 1) I do not use Outlook at home - Eudora is my e-mail app and I also have a Palm LifeDrive, so use the Palm Desktop app. Do I need to get Outlook up and running?; 2) my home (wireless) internet connection seems to be down (still working to get fixed) - does AS need to "hit" the internet as part of the install process?

I've already spent a fair amount of time cruising through the many posts and did not see a question like this one. I don't consider myself a tech n00b, so this has been frustrating for me. Angry Setting up 4 e-mail accounts, including my work e-mail thru an Exchange Server, was a piece of cake compared to the AS installation attempts.

I really, really hope someone has an answer - or at least suggestions - for solving this. Thanks in advance!

1) Outlook shouldn't be required to install ActiveSync.
2) A stable internet connection shouldn't be required either.

Then I've got some questions.

1) From where are you installing ActiveSync? (A disk that came with the TP, or a file from the internet? etc...)
2) Which service provider do you use? (Sprint, Verizon, Telenor, Netcom, Vodafone etc...)

Thanks for your reply, tkima! I've tried installing from the disc that came with the TP and I've downloaded from the Microsoft site to a jump drive and tried installing that way.

My service provider is U.S. Cellular.

I've done some researching and here's what I've found, read them.

"You'll need to have a PC version of Outlook or something called Outlook mobile data for ActiveSync to sync to your mobile device. If for whatever reason your outlook is not install onto your desktop PC you need to go ahead and install the outlook before installing ActiveSync. There is a copy of Outlook on your companion CD if you look inside the package that came with your smart phone Windows mobile device."

Okay. Tried all 4 options and none of them worked. *sigh* I appreciate all the suggestions nonetheless.  Sad

The interesting thing is that I installed the software on my Lenovo IdeaPad S10 netbook with no trouble at all. Not what I had in mind, but I'll go for it right now.

Getting everything set up to sync is my next big adventure.  Tongue

I'm wondering if Microsoft isn't trying to access the internet after all? Last time I downloaded from them, they tried to verify that I had a genuine MS OS version running, before they allowed to go further.

I don't know if it will help, but you might have better luck hooking up to a wifi spot somewhere.

I got the internet problem at home resolved and all is well there. AS still won't install past 59 or 61%. As a test, I packed my external CD/DVD burner/drive along with my netbook and set it up at work. Like I said, no problem with the install.

I got to thinking (and this scares most people who know me!) that maybe my Palm LifeDrive apps may be interfering somehow. I don't want to remove the Palm apps until I get the TP up and running the way I want it to. (The point of getting the TP was to have phone and PDA all in one nice little toy.) Any thoughts on that one?

other than "installation can not be completed" - does it give you an error code?

To eliminate the other sync software from being the culprit, go into your task manager and "end program" on all programs that have to do with the palm software.

Make sure your firewall / norton doesn't block anything either (turn off temporarily), as well as Windows Defender.

Other than that, I'm puzzled, why it wouldn't even install.

*No error code - it would probably be much more helpful to me if I did get one!

*I was talking to one of the computer guys here at work about the Palm software possibly being an issue and he suggested the same thing you did and since we're all thinking along the same lines, that's my next line of attack. And I've been making a point to turn off ZoneAlarm and AVG when I try to install.

Other than that, I'm puzzled, why it wouldn't even install.
*I appreciate your thoughts on all this. I'm really not that incompetent with a computer, but this one's got me knocked on my keester! LOL

Just wanted to post an update...

I exited out ZoneAlarm, AVGFree, and Palm Sync, which were all in the System Tray. Then I brought up the Task Manager and killed any processes I recognized as Palm-related.

Without restarting, I popped the install disk in the drive, and held my breath. Don't know if it helped, but you know how it goes. The manual or handbook or whatever you want to call it installed right away as it had before. ActiveSync sped thru to 99% and then stopped. Then it did it again and I was thinking it wasn't going to work. Imagine my relief when I got the green checkmark!

I connected the phone to the computer et voila! Even got the 3rd-party software that was a large part of the reason I got the TouchPro installed and working great. Life is good...

Glad it worked out for you m8.
And thanks for the heads up on ActiveSync and Palm programs.
